BEEF CATTLE
Our beef clients include pedigree breeders, commercial suckler herds and fattening units. We have close links with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, the organisation for beef and lamb levy payers in England , part of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). We hold farmer meetings on a regular basis.
Our lead bovine vet Helen has a keen interest in the beef industry and has her own herd of 50 suckler cows.
Disease prevention
As a practice we firmly believe in preventative medicine. We have many herds on regular vaccination protocols for respiratory disease, BVD, Leptospirosis and IBR.
We have several herds signed up to disease eradication programmes following the CHeCKS accreditation schemes. We can also test the disease status of stock before and after showing and sales.
Fertility work
We offer:
pregnancy diagnosis
bull breeding examinations including full semen examination
synchronisation in preparation for Artificial Insemination (AI) or embryo transfer
Bovine caesareans
It is our practice protocol for a vet to have an assistant (Vet or nurse) to perform caesarian operations at any time of day or night. Speed is of the essence when dealing with these situations. If there are complications we can manage them much more efficiently with two pairs of hands.
All of our caesareans receive a post-operative check 3 days after the operation to monitor both the cow and calf.
Calf health
We regularly investigate outbreaks of pneumonia and scours. We can carry out farm visits to include ventilation and housing assessments. At the practice we can hospitalise calves which require intravenous fluid therapy or intensive care.
